How We Created Our Top List

To find the best credit cards for travel, we conducted a thorough and objective comparison of cards from several Norwegian banks and credit providers. The goal is to give you an honest and up-to-date overview of which cards actually provide the most value when you travel.

In our evaluation, we focused on three main criteria:

  • Travel benefits – we assess what advantages the card offers when traveling, such as travel insurance, bonus points, cashback, discounts, and lounge access.
  • Fees – we evaluate annual fees, foreign exchange fees, withdrawal fees, and any charges for using the card abroad.
  • Ease of use – we consider how easy the card is to use, the quality of customer service, app features, and acceptance abroad.

Our ranking is based on an overall assessment of these factors, making it easier for you to find the credit card that best suits your travel habits and needs.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Credit Card While Traveling?

Included Travel Insurance

Many credit cards provide comprehensive travel insurance if you pay at least half of your trip with the card. This often covers transportation and accommodation costs and protects you financially if something unexpected happens during your trip. Some credit cards also include rental car insurance, cancellation insurance, and other useful coverage.

Discounts and Bonus Points

Many travel credit cards offer discounts on hotels, rental cars, and other travel expenses, helping you save money. Several cards also allow you to earn airline points on all purchases. This means you can accumulate points and redeem them for free flights, hotel stays, or upgrades.

Increased Security

It is safer to book travel with a credit card. If an airline, hotel chain, or tour operator goes bankrupt, you have a better chance of getting your money back. During your trip, credit cards give you better control over your expenses, and if you need to dispute a purchase, you have stronger consumer protection compared to paying with a debit card. Additionally, you always have access to a financial buffer in case unexpected expenses arise.

Lower Foreign Exchange Fees and Free Withdrawals

Most travel credit cards offer favorable foreign exchange rates and allow you to withdraw cash abroad without fees. This can help you avoid unnecessary costs.

  • Credit cards with low foreign exchange fees
  • Credit cards with no withdrawal fees

Access to Airport Lounges

Many premium travel credit cards give you access to airport lounges worldwide. Some cards offer discounted entry, while others cover the full cost. Perfect if you want a more comfortable travel experience.

Concierge Service

A concierge acts as your personal assistant, helping you with everything from booking tables at popular restaurants to securing tickets for sold-out events. Need help getting your shirt pressed at 4 a.m.? Or planning a detailed itinerary? Some services can even assist with luggage handling or last-minute hotel bookings—ideal for frequent travelers.

How to Find the Best Card for You

Before applying for a new travel credit card, it’s important to compare different options to find the one that suits you best. Look for cards that include the insurance, rewards, and discounts you actually need. This way, you can both save money and enjoy a safer and more comfortable travel experience.

It Can Be Beneficial to Have Multiple Credit Cards

Sometimes, there isn’t a single credit card that covers all your needs. In that case, it can be a good idea to combine two different cards. For example:

It might be best to use one card for booking flights and hotels, and another during the trip to avoid fees and receive favorable discounts. Two travel credit cards that work well together are:

  • For booking flights and hotels: Bank Norwegian Visa gives you bonus points on all purchases, which can be used for flights with Norwegian Air. The card also includes free travel insurance.
  • A card for use during the trip: Morrow Bank credit card gives you 50 days’ interest-free credit. The card has no withdrawal fees and a low foreign exchange markup, making it ideal for reducing fees and saving money while traveling.

Once you have identified what is important to you, you can start applying for a travel credit card that suits your needs.

It can also matter which country you are traveling to. For example, whether you are visiting a country like Denmark, where card payments are accepted almost everywhere, or a country like Thailand, where you often need access to cash. Here, we have gathered guides on the best credit cards in different countries, as well as other valuable information about card usage in those destinations.

How did you choose a card for your trip?

When I was choosing a card, my main goal was to find the one that provided the most value for money. It was also important that the benefits were things I would actually use frequently.

I was particularly interested in earning airline points, but at the same time, I wanted a free card since I wasn’t sure how much I would be traveling.

In practice, the choice came down to SAS Amex Classic and Bank Norwegian Visa. SAS Amex Classic was appealing because of its valuable “2-for-1” voucher for travel in Europe. The downside was that you needed an annual spending of at least 100,000 NOK to qualify for it. Since Amex is not accepted in as many places, and the card also had high fees abroad and lacked travel insurance, I didn’t feel it was worth it for me.

That’s why I chose Bank Norwegian Visa. The card met all my requirements: it includes travel insurance, earns airline rewards (CashPoints) on all purchases, and as a major bonus, it offers fee-free cash withdrawals abroad.

Are you also having trouble choosing between SAS Amex Classic and Bank Norwegian Visa?

If so, you can read our comparison of the cards. We compare SAS Amex Classic and Bank Norwegian’s credit card side by side, so those considering them can quickly gain a clearer understanding of the differences and which one is the better choice.

Checklist for smart credit card use when traveling

To avoid expensive fees and ensure you actually get the benefits you expect, it's crucial to know how your card works abroad. Use this checklist to ensure you're using your credit card in the smartest and cheapest way next time you're traveling.

  1. Always pay in local currency - When you pay with your card abroad, you will often be given the choice between paying in local currency or in Norwegian kroner. If you choose Norwegian kroner, an unnecessary double exchange occurs, giving you a much worse exchange rate and higher costs. By choosing local currency, you ensure the cheapest currency exchange.
  2. Read the terms and conditions of the travel insurance - For the insurance to be valid, you must meet specific requirements. Read the terms and conditions carefully before booking. A common requirement is that you must pay at least 50% of the total travel and accommodation costs with the relevant credit card. There may also be geographical restrictions, for example, that the trip must start and end in the Nordic countries for the insurance to be valid. You can read more about travel insurance and its terms and conditions here.
  3. Avoid withdrawing cash from ATMs with your credit card - This is almost always the most expensive way to get cash. You will usually be charged a high withdrawal fee, and in addition, the interest-free days do not apply to cash withdrawals; interest starts to accrue immediately from day 1. If you need to withdraw cash, it is usually much cheaper to use a debit card.
  4. Carry more than one card - If you are unfortunate enough to lose your card, have your wallet stolen, or have your card blocked due to suspected fraud, you will be stuck without money. So always carry at least two cards with you. Keep them in separate places, such as one in your wallet and one in your hotel room safe.
  5. Read the terms and conditions for lounge access - Before you travel, check the rules that apply to your card. Is access completely free, or do you only have a certain number of free visits per year? Does it cost money to bring a guest? Does lounge access apply to the specific airports you'll be visiting? It's frustrating to plan a lounge visit only to be turned away at the door.
